Ruskin House School - Ofsted

Our Last Ofsted Inspection

Our last inspection was completed in July 2009 and the nursery was graded as satisfactory.  Ofsted’s classification of a satisfactory report states “This aspect of the provision is sound”, we were seen to be sound in all areas covered in our inspection.

What steps need to be taken to improve the provision further?

List below are the items which Ofsted advised us to make improvements to.

  • Devised and implement a system to know children’s starting point and what level they are at when they first start. Since this time we now complete a starter pack for all children in conjunction with the parent/carer to ensure we have a full background record of all children starting with us.
  • Ensure activity plans include the six areas of learning.  Both staff training, reorganisation of management structure and reinvestment into the school has now ensured that all of these areas are being met and are continuously worked on.
  • Review organisation of routines to enable children to have access to a varied range of toys and equipment to develop their self-help skills, independence and to make their own choices about what they would like to do.  Reorganisation within our classrooms now means that children have access to different toys and equipment throughout the day.
  • Ensure records for risk assessments carried out for the outdoor areas and outings are available for inspection.  New Risk Assessments have since been introduced; all papers and records are kept on site.
  • Provide a range of equipment to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of the world, for example information technology.  Since out last inspection a large amount of reinvestment has been made into the nursery which includes information technology and more resources for the children.

Some of the other comments that were made in our last inspection report:

  • “Positive inclusive practice is promoted through staff working with parents, children whom speak English as an additional language and those with learning difficulties.”
  • “Children are able to make good use of outdoor play area and a balanced range of resources are available for older and younger children to develop their physical skills.”
  • “Overall children are happy and enjoy their time at Ruskin House.”
  • “Routines are in place to enable children to learn about good hygiene habits.  They know how to wash their hands after using the toilet and staff have good routines for nappy changing. “
  • “Staff are consistently teaching children boundaries and how sharing is caring which contributes to positive good behaviour.”
  • “Meals provided are balance and nutritious.  Snacks and lunches provided are healthy.”

As a nursery we have now implemented two staff inset days per annum to help ensure that the whole team are heading in the right direction.  We also work closely with our local authority and local children’s centre to ensure that we continue to improve in every way possible
